Care recipient (cr) needs help regaining his or her self esteem

Try: Try not to call attention to any lapses of memory or inaccurate statements instead act as if everything the cr does is normal try not to argue with the cr instead try to soothe and distract try not to tell the cr that he or she is repeating something this may be upsetting and the repetition may not be something that can be stopped just keep responding to cr cr’s point in a pleasant way and then try to redirect the conversation try not to be patronizing or critical of the cr try not to let cr see your frustration or disappointment these all may have a negative effect on self-esteem try to avoid correcting explaining or reasoning with cr for example if cr asks to see his or her mother try to avoid pointing out that she died a long ago just say something like you wish you could see her too or ask what she was like then move on to another topic
