A Care recipient (cr) with dementia calls for a deceased mother or family member

Try: #don’t argue with the cr’s reality once you realize the cr is stuck in a past time period #tell the cr you understand the desire to see mother and acknowledge you can tell the cr misses her #try to discover the underlying feeling the cr has that may be adding to a longing for mother is the cr feeling sad lonely lost or confused #say to the cr you seem very sad i am here for you or simply allow the cr to express feelings and offer comfort non-verbally through touch hug or sympathetic expressions #if the cr stays focused on longing for mother and doesn’t respond to a distraction encourage description or stories about the cr cr’s mother #it may or may not be comforting for a cr to hold or look at a picture of mother trial and error will reveal if one picture rather than another matches the cr’s inner picture of his or her mother or if looking at photographs is simply confusing
