Care recipient (cr) is not involved in meal planning and preparation the caregiver gg needs ideas on how this could be accomplished this could help get the cr get engaged in a fun and rewarding activity instead of just sitting around and watching someone else do it

Try: Even though the cr is unable to prepare an entire meal alone just being involved in meal planning and preparation can be satisfying compile a list of the cr’s favorite foods and meals the cg and cr should both have input in making the list sit down with the cr and make menu plans for the next two weeks incorporate any special dietary needs of the cr make a companion grocery list that would go along with each meal planned try to include at least one item per meal that the cr can actually help prepare this would be his or her special contribution to the meal make adjustments for any activities scheduled around meal times for instance you could plan a crock pot meal on days when doctor’s appointments are scheduled some meals could actually be designed around a central theme such as picnic tail gate chinese italian or hispanic the theme could be expanded to include decorations and attire worn for the meal the anticipation and preparation for the event could be fun for everyone involved

The Care recipient (cr) needs information on driving safely

Try: Take it slow and use plenty of room if cars are passing the cr on both the right and left lanes the cr may be driving more slowly than he she used to move into the slow lane so others can pass safely to avoid problems if the vehicle in front of the cr stops suddenly stay back about two car lengths be sure to yield the right of way in intersections older drivers also have a large number of accidents at intersections when making left turns it is best to avoid them altogether by making successive right turns and keeping going around the block or blocks to get to a destination

Care recipient (cr) is not driving safely and needs safety tips

Try: Encourage the cr to implement the following suggestions provide support and encouragement as needed focus solely on driving when behind the wheel avoid distractions such as looking around at the scenery instead of the road turning head to talk with a passenger eating or drinking turning the radio dials heating air conditioning controls and so on reaching for something talking on the phone text messaging drive defensively at all times for example do not tailgate others allow plenty of distance from the car in front of you in case that driver slows down or makes a suddent stop if other drivers are tailgating you get out of their way as soon as possible and let them pass pull over if you need to this temporary inconvenience is a lot better than getting rear ended anticipate what can go wrong because it probably will adjust your driving accordingly for example that kid on a bike will probably turn right in front of your car before you can drive by the car that shouldn’t pull out in front of you at an intersection probably will drive the speed limit or slower if driving conditions warrant do not consistently drive under the speed limit for no apparent reason driving too slow can be as dangerous as driving too fast this will create a safety hazard with other inpatient drivers who are prone to take chances when in a hurry you should not drive if you cannot turn your head to see cross traffic or to back up the car do not drink and drive
