Try: Low back pain is very common among care recipients cr and is often caused by overuse and muscle strain or injury treatment can help the cr stay as active as possible and it will help the cr understand that some continued or repeated back pain is not surprising or dangerous most low back pain can get better if you with activity avoid positions and activities that may increase or cause back pain use ice and take nonprescription pain relievers when needed when the cr no longer has acute pain he may be ready for gentle strengthening exercises for the stomach back and legs and perhaps for some stretching exercises exercise may not only help decrease low back pain but it may also help recovery prevent re-injury to the back and reduce the risk of disability from back pain exercises to reduce low back pain are not complicated and can be done at home without any special equipment with many cr’s you need to remind them that gentle activity the cr should try to be active soon after noticing pain and gradually increase your activity level too little activity can lead to loss of flexibility strength and endurance and then to more pain information references webmd com

Try: If the Care recipient (cr) struggles with back pain exercise may be a good option exercise and staying active may relieve low back pain and can help speed the cr’s recovery the cr should start with basic movements such as walking and standing if possible the cr should try stretching and strengthening her stomach back and leg muscles helps make them less susceptible to injury that can cause back pain strong stomach back and leg muscles also better support the spine reducing pressure on spinal discs this may help prevent disc injury aerobic exercises-such as walking swimming or walking in waist-deep water-also help maintain a healthy back aerobic exercise makes the heart and other muscles use oxygen more efficiently muscles that frequently receive oxygen-rich blood stay healthier information references webmd com

Try: Osteoporosis is a common disease in some care recipients cr that weakens bones as bones weaken the risk of sudden and unexpected fractures increases osteopenia is the forerunner of osteoporosis it is a silent but destructive condition that affects bones as well no matter how old the cr is osteoporosis can be an issue while bones might seem sturdy now things can change with one minor injury or incident in fact there are usually no visible signs the first sign usually is a broken bone or injury the bone loss with osteoporosis occurs over many years and is severe it it’s so severe that the normal stress on bones from sitting standing coughing or even hugging a loved one can result in painful fractures and immobility also after the first fracture the cr is at risk for more fractures these future fractures may cause daily chronic pain they can lead to disability the good news is that many cr’s can take steps to prevent osteoporosis information references webmd com

Try: Strength training is one way a Care recipient (cr) can help prevent osteoporosis before the cr begins exercises or strength training consult with a doctor because the cr’s health may restrict activity it it’s recommended that adults get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day to strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis weight-bearing exercises force your body to resist gravity and stimulate cells in the body that make new bone strength training causes the muscles to pull on the bone this results in increased bone strength and increased flexibility in the cr the following examples of weight-bearing and strengthening exercises can help keep bones strong aerobics climbing stairs dancing jogging running tai chi walking water aerobics yoga these exercises will not only help improve muscle strength they will also help strengthen bones lifting canned goods or bags of groceries lifting free weights lifting young children using ankle and wrist weights using elastic resistance band using weight machines using your own weight as resistance working out with barbells information references webmd com

Try: Care recipients cr experiencing back pain will have several treatment options depending on the cr and the specific condition back surgery is one option in some extreme situations depending on the diagnosis surgery may either be the first treatment of choice rare or it is reserved for chronic back pain for which other treatments have failed if the cr is in constant pain or if pain reoccurs frequently and interferes with the ability to sleep the cr may be a candidate for surgery in general there are two groups of people who may require surgery to treat their spinal problems people in the first group have chronic low back pain or herniated discs are common candidates people in the second group are those with only predominant low back pain or have degenerative discs some of the diagnoses that may need surgery include herniated discs spinal stenosis spondylolisthesis a condition in which a vertebra of the lumbar spine slips out of place vertebral fractures degenerative discs information references webmd com

Try: The specific causes of osteoporosis are often unknown in many care recipients cr osteoporosis will develop over the cr’s life bones are complex living tissue the body constantly breaks down old bone and rebuilds new bone during childhood bones become larger and stronger peak bone mass occurs when a person has the maximum amount of bone mass they will ever have for most people this usually happens during the third decade of life at a certain age the bone building process changes new bone gets laid down at a slower rate this slowdown results in a decrease in the total amount of bone a cr has if this loss of bone reaches a certain point the person has osteopenia when bone loss becomes more severe the condition is osteoporosis both men and women with osteopenia or osteoporosis are at a higher risk of fractures in the early stages of osteoporosis there may be no signs or symptoms as the breakdown and removal of bone continues at a faster pace than bone building the degree of bone loss may be detectable on a bone density scan information references webmd com

Try: Many care recipients cr experience low back pain issues if a cr has low back pain pain doesn’t stop when he goes to bed at night there there’s a vicious cycle of back pain and sleep problems that contribute to each other you can’t sleep if your back hurts and sometimes your back hurts more because you’re not sleeping well one common is problems with the cr’s mattress a mattress has a significant impact on sleep make sure the mattress supports you well enough to maintain your spine in the position you have with good standing posture a firm — but not hard — mattress is usually best if buying a new bed is not an option right now try adding plywood supports between the mattress and its base or as a temporary solution have someone move your mattress onto the floor also put a pillow under your knees when lying on your back and between your knees when lying on your side to help maintain the curve in your back while sleeping try a rolled-up towel wrapped around your waist and tied in front another issue for some older cr’s is getting in and out of bed when getting in and out of bed the cr should never quickly get up from a lying position to get into bed sit on the side of the bed supporting yourself with your hands bend your knees and lie down onto your side to get out of bed roll onto your side bend both knees and push yourself up with your hands while swinging your legs over the side of the bed avoid bending forward at the waist which can put strain on your back information references webmd com
